What's On? 26/01/17
I'm in Edinburgh and it's only the day after Burns Night, so I have to mention T2 (Trainspotting 2), which is showing this weekend at the Cameo and probably everywhere in Edinburgh. Actually, I'd like to mention the smoke-machine-laden, shiny and spot-light lit premiere for T2 at Fountainpark last week, because I really didn't like the way the organizers had blocked off the retail park from passers-by, with large black fences. This movie of down-to-earth, down-at-heel fifty-something Scottish men, a real salt-of-the-earth slice of life at the tough end of the coal face, and they treat it as an exclusive 'fuck-you' to people walking by on the pavement. At one point I tried crossing the entrance of Fountainpark and a security guard started shouting at me, tried stopping me, wanted me to wait for as long as necessary while posh cars with men in tuxedoes (it might actually have been the car carrying the cast) was trying to get in. Well, fuck them with their large black fences. I've been to their fucking cinema countless times, I don't wait for a bunch of millionaire actors flown in from LA, pretending to be Scottish. I crossed between the posh cars to the shouts of angry bodyguards, and I only wish I'd had a can of mace and that the security guard had tried to block me.
Anyway, I got home, and I still want to watch their movie. What else? Moonlight is on release from the 30th and I've heard it's amazing, about a story of the life of a gay person growing up in black urban USA. Lacking as it does faux-Scottish millionaires and seven-foot bodyguards, I think it's likely to be more accessible than T2, in a literal sense at least.
